James Durden 1878 - 1964 Painter born in Manchester, where he studied at the School of Art, then Royal College of Art. Exhibited RA, ROI, RP, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and Paris Salon. James gained a silver medal in 1927 and also showed in the provinces, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Manchester City Art Gallery. Several foreign galleries hold his work, which was reproduced by the Medici Society. Lived near Keswick, Cumberland. Rudolf Helmet Sauter Rudolf Sauter was born in 1895. He was educated at Harrow School, and later studied art in London and Munich. Sauter exhibited extensively and internationally. This included shows in Paris, New York, and South Africa. Following the declaration of war with Germany, the British government passed the Aliens Restriction Act. In December 1915, Rudolf was interned in a converted Alexandra Palace and in Frith Hill Camp, Surrey. Letters written to his wife while interned are held today in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. Following the war, Sauter became a naturalized British citizen, something he referred to as "purely formal", having lived in England since he was a year old. During World War II acted as an Army Welfare officer, visiting the wives and children of soldiers. Helen Stirling Johnston 1888-1931 Born Troon, Ayrshire. Studied Glasgow School of Art 1907-1915, winning a Haldane Travelling Scholarship enabled her to visit Paris. Won Lauder prize in 1922. Continued to travel to the continent, painting in Brittany and Corsica. Had a studio in Kirkcudbright behind 9 High Street. Was an active member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists.
